Kim Novak, star of the Alfred Hitchcock classic “Vertigo”, is presently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.  The actress, 77, discovered she had the disease after a routine mammogram; according to reports, the cancer was caught at an early stage. Novak’s manager, Sue Cameron, said that she is getting on very well due to her physical condition. “All her doctors say she is in fantastic physical shape and should recover very well,” she said.  Apparently Nova stays in shape through a combination of horse-back riding and weight training.

Although Novak is most well-known for her role in 1958′s Vertigo, she appeared in many other movies up until her retirement from acting in 1991 to pursue a career as a painter.  Among her other movies include “Of Human Bondage”, based on the novel by Somerset Maugham, “The Man With the Golden Arm” alongside Frank Sinatra, and another brush with Alfred Hitchcock in 1980′s “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”.

Novak, born in 1933 in Chicago Illinois, currently lives in Oregon with her veterinarian husband, where the two raise livestock, and where Novak is able to pursue her regular horse-back riding.

Concerning her role in Vertigo, widely considered as a cinematic masterpiece, Novak has received both praise and otherwise for her performance. While some believe it to be one of the major performances by a woman in cinema, others, including Alfred Hitchcock himself, believed it to be less than dazzling.  You think you’re getting a lot,” said Hitchcock in an interview concerning Novak’s performance in Vertigo, “but you’re not.”
