Willow Smith reveals the meaning of “Whip My Hair”

Posted on 21. Oct, 2010 by in Entertainment

If you haven’t already heard about it, you’ve probably guessed right; indeed, Willow Smith is the daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, and at 9 years of age, has already made her way into show business. Smith the younger’s single “Whip My Hair” has been a hit for the past few weeks, and is also prompting a number of people to ask just what the lyrics mean.

Behold a sample of the much-wondered lyrics, quoted from songlyrics.com: “Hop up out the bed turn my swag on; Pay no attention to them haters cuz we whip em off; And we ain’t doing nothing wrong; So don’t tell me nothing, I’m just tryn’a have fun; So keep the party jumping”. This type of thing with a chorus that pretty much just says “I whip my hair back and forth”.

A mystery indeed. But for those of you who want the skinny straight from the horse’s mouth, Willow Smith herself has offered her interpretation of the song’s lyrics.  ”‘Whip My Hair’ means don’t be afraid to be yourself, and don’t let anybody tell you that that’s wrong. Because the best thing is you,” said Willow.

So there you have it; “Whip My Hair”‘s deceptively simple lyrics are actually a testament to individuality and perseverance in the face of static-haired scrutiny; and shame on you for requiring a 9-year-old girl to reveal this to you.

Willow Smith, for the success and possibly existential significance of “Whip My Hair”, was signed to Jay-Z’s record label, “Roc Nation”, this year.
