Americans fear Hurricane Earl will take their guns away

Following Hurricane Katrina, law enforcement officials confiscated guns from residents of New Orleans; fearing chaos among the civilian population, the city of New Orleans felt that it would be better if guns were only in the hands of the police.
Now that Hurricane Earl is on his way, Americans in other parts of the country are starting to wonder if their constitutional rights will be violated in like manner. In North Carolina on the 1st of September, a state of emergency was declared in preparation for Earl’s arrival. “The declaration calls for all state and local governments to cooperate in the North Carolina Emergency Operations Plan,” reported a local news station. Although it has not been confirmed whether or not the North Carolina Emergency Operation Plan will include the confiscation of guns, locals comparing their situation with that in New Orleans fear they will find themselves similarly gun-less.
Some citizens are questioning the wisdom of confiscating guns at a time when crime will certainly be on the raise; the way of thinking here is “if you take my gun I won’t be able to defend myself from others who do have guns.” Citizens are perhaps also concerned about secret, criminal owned guns that police will not be able to confiscate, and which will leave upstanding citizen confiscate-ees defenseless.
