The Alaska Earthquake Information Center reported an earthquake that struck this afternoon at 3:24pm PDT. The 4.9 magnitude quake was calculated to be centered in South Central Alaska near Hope and Willow. United States Geological Society officials, when asked, report that the quake is one of several that occurred over the past 24 hour period.
Cindi Preller, a geologist with the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has reported that people have said that the quake “shook awful hard.” While this statement is somewhat qualitative, it does suggest that today’s quake was larger than normal and we will have to stay tuned for damage reports and injury assessment. Thus far, only minor damage and luckily no injuries have been reported.
The quake was centered 13 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city. The temblor originated 26 miles below the surface and it has been reported to have been felt across most of southern Alaska, with reports of shifting furniture and minor damage to residential structures.
