Vaginal Birth After Cesarean – Safe according to Doctors

Posted on 25. Jul, 2010 by in Health

Pregnant women who had undergone a cesarean section for their child may not have to undergo another c-section for their succeeding births. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said that VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) is safe and good for women who previously had a cesarean section.  The National Institute of Health expert panel has also said that they prefer to practice VBAC as an answer to the rise in the number of mothers who undergo unnecessary Cesarean sections.

VBAC had been practiced before but had a sudden decline after studies showing that it posed the mother a risk for uterine rupture. “Moving forward, we need to work collaboratively with our patients, our colleagues, hospitals and insurers to swing the pendulum back to fewer Caesareans and a more reasonable VBAC rate,” said Dr. Richard N. Waldman. More recent researches showed that the risk of uterine rupture is very small, less than a percent and the risk for serious complications were smaller.

Dr. William A. Grobman of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, co-author of the guidelines for VBC said, “The best method is getting information about the risks and benefits on working with providers to make sure they can have the approach to delivery that they want.” Advantages of VBAC are it lowers a woman’s risk of excessive bleeding and infections and usually means a less painful and shorter recovery if she had a surgery. Also, women who avoid repeat c-sections have lower risk of having complications with their future pregnancies.
