Deepwater oil well finally contained…for now

The latest mission to finally put an end to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that has so far lasted 107 days is being characterized as a success, but at the same time officials are warning that problems could still re-emerge should an even more permanent solution fail to occur.

Scientists involved with the project are characterizing the spill as a ‘beast’ that has been slayed, but that still has the potential to rise up and strike again.  “It’ll look like it’s mortally wounded but may not be dead,” said Tom Hunter, formerly of Sandia National Laboratory.  Adm. Thad W. Allen, formerly of the Coast Guard, had a similar comment:”You want to make sure it’s really dead dead dead. Don’t want anything to rise out of the grave.”

All in all,  the the recent plugging from the project known as ‘static kill’ was for all practical purposes a success; but, those responsible for the cleanup want to make really sure that problems don’t re-emerge in the future.  “The static kill is not the end all be all,” said Allen.  “In the long run, drilling into the annulus and into the casing pipe from below, filling that with mud and then filling that with cement is the only solution to the end of this. And there should be no ambiguity about that. I’m the national incident commander, and that’s the way this will end.”
