Mother Grizzly Involved in Mauling Given Death Sentence

The female Grizzly responsible for mauling 3 campers at a campground overnight Wednesday, in ‘Soda Butte Campground’, which is approximately 5 miles from Yellowstone National Park, was euthanized today. She was captured with her three 1 year old cubs. The cubs are being sent to a zoo, expected to be ZooMontana in Billings, Montana.

The maulings occurred separately, leaving one man dead, and 2 other campers with bites. The man, identified as 48 yr old Kevin Kammer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was apparently dragged close to 25 feet, and partially eaten by the Grizzly family. DNA evidence positively linked the mother Grizzly to the attack.

Unprovoked Grizzly attacks are uncommon, and taken seriously. Yellowstone National Park, alone, has a Grizzly population of approximately 600 bears. With hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and steadily rising in numbers, Grizzly encounters are inevitably to become more common.

Due to the odd behavior of the Grizzly sow, a necropsy will be performed to determine whether she suffered a physical ailment or disability. While Grizzly attacks have occurred in the past, they were generally provoked by  various mechanisms. As humans happily traipse further and more often into what was once a relatively unmolested habitat, the impact on Grizzly bear behavior is undoubtedly going to have a significant impact.
