Princess Cruise Line Death-Humpback Whale
Wednesday afternoon, a dead female Humpback Whale was discovered crushed to the bow of Princess Cruise Line’s ship, the Sapphire Princess, off the coast of Alaska. In the past decade, this is the 3rd time Princess Cruise Line has been
involved in the death of a Whale.
Humpback Whales are protected under the ‘Endangered Species Act’, and at present it is unclear as to whether or not charges will be filed. The Sapphire Princess was traveling from Ketchikan, Alaska to Juneau, Alaska when the incident occurred.
The Sapphire Princess stopped near Douglas Island for the Whale’s body to be removed. Biologists will be performing a necropsy in order to determine the cause of death. In one prior Whale incident involving Princess Cruise Lines, there was one which died of a crushed skull, and far worse, was discovered to be a pregnant female.
Just last year, this same ship was involved in an incident with a Finback Whale, another protected species. While not admitting culpability, Princess Cruise Lines nevertheless settled one criminal charge by paying a fine of $750,000. At this time, they are actively aiding in the investigation of the death of the female Humpback Whale from Wednesday.
