1 in 5 Americans believe Obama is Muslim

A recent poll has determined that 1 in 5 Americans believe that President Barack Obama is Muslim; he isn’t. Apparently many people cited the President’s biography as the source of their faulty belief, however the book appears to have no such references to Barack Obama as a follower of Islam.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton attempts to clear away the ambiguity surrounding the President’s religion: “The president is obviously – he’s Christian. He prays every day. He communicates withhis religious adviser every single day. There’s a group of pastors that he takes counsel from on a regular basis. His faith is very important to him, but it’s not something that’s a topic of conversation every single day.” Where then, does this perception that Obama is Muslim come from? Could it be that Obama’s sympathy for the construction of the mosque near the site of the September 11th attacks has influenced this perception? Or, have Americans become so shallow that, the reason is simply because his skin is dark?
It is possible that the growing perception of President Obama as a Muslim is partly proportional to his falling reputation in the polls lately; but more important than the simple fact of what Americans will do as voters, there is also the implication here of an increasingly uninformed and possibly of an increasingly intellectually stunted American population.
