Arab League to Back Palestinian-Israeli Direct Talks

Posted on 29. Jul, 2010 by in Politics

The Arab League, in a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo, agreed to support direct talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials when Abbas is ready for such, according to reports. Until then, the League will support the US-led indirect talks.

Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheik Hamad bin Jassem Al Thani, who chaired the meeting, said that the Arab League will support the possibility of direct talks, but is willing to wait until Abbas and his team are prepared.

“(The timing of the direct talks) is a matter for the Palestinian side to decide,” he said, also stating that there would be certain conditions associated with the talks. “Of course, there is agreement, but agreement over the principles of what will be discussed and the manner of the direct negotiations,” he said.

The Arab League outlined the conditions, as well as a time frame for when the talks should occur. They also sent a message to US President Barrack Obama to explain their concerns as well as the concerns of the Palestinians plus the requirements of the talks.

“We have confidence in America and in President Obama to reach peace, but the question is can that be achieved?” said Al Thani.
