Britain Endorses Turkey’s Bid for EU Membership

Posted on 27. Jul, 2010 by in Politics

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has stated that he will strongly support the induction of Turkey in the European Union, stating that Turkey’s inclusion is key to the trade and security of the region, according to reports.

“It makes me angry that your progress can be frustrated in the way that it has been,” stated Cameron in a speech made in Ankara. “My view is clear. I believe that it’s just wrong to say that Turkey can guard the camp but not be allowed to sit inside the tent. I will remain your strongest possible advocate for EU membership and for greater influence at the top table of European diplomacy.”

Cameron’s trip to Turkey was one stop on a three tier trip, which will see him visit India next. The new Prime Minister is keen on changing foreign policy, specifically as it pertains to commercial interests.

The UK have backed Turkey’s induction into the EU for many years, although the Eastern nation has been faced with heavy scepticism from member nations. However, Cameron has attacked this criticism stating that it is prejudiced, and that those opposed to their induction “willfully misunderstand Islam,” Mr. Cameron said.
