Obama continues to support ‘ground zero’ mosque

Even after a furious backlash from conservative Americans regarding the building of the so called ‘ground zero’ mosque, President Obama is still standing his ground; he maintains the position that Muslim people have the right to build a mosque wherever they want as part of a basic freedom of religion that is, in theory, part of the very foundation of America.
In answer to the criticism he received for supporting the mosque, Obama said: “my intention was simply to let people know what I thought. Which was that in this country we treat everybody equally and in accordance with the law, regardless of race, regardless of religion.” Furthermore, a spokesman for the President reiterated his position in general: “What he said last night, and reaffirmed today, is that if a church, a synagogue or a Hindu temple can be built on a site, you simply cannot deny that right to those who want to build a mosque.”
The President did however make a slight concession regarding his earlier comments about the mosque. More recently he has said “I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there,” suggesting that he may not think it is wise to put the mosque in that particular place.
