Obama Pleads With Republicans to Side With Unemployment Extension

Posted on 17. Jul, 2010 by in Politics

President Barrack Obama has attempted to convince Senate Republicans to stop blocking the new legislation that will allow for unemployment extensions as well as those measures introduced helping small businesses expand.

In his weekly internet and radio address, Obama pleaded with the Republicans who have continually blocked the advancement of the unemployment legislation: ““Think about what these stalling tactics mean for the millions of Americans who’ve lost their jobs since the recession began,” stated the President. “For many, it was the only way to make ends meet while searching for work.”

On June 30, Republicans blocked Senate action because they believe the extension for unemployment would be added to the already hefty $1.5 Trillion budget deficit. However, they did claim to back benefits extensions if the costs were balanced by using the funds from last year’s stimulus package.

Because the government is experiencing an “economic disaster”, the President believes that since Congress has seen spending for unemployment as an “emergency expenditure” the current Congress should do the same: “The fact is, most economists agree that extending unemployment insurance is one of the single most cost-effective ways to help jumpstart the economy,” he said.
