Oil spill causes America to lose faith in Obama

The results of a recent poll shows that fewer Americans have faith in President Obama to respond to large scale crises such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill off the coast of Louisiana.  A similar phenomenon occurred in a poll about George W. Bush after hurricane Katrina.  Only roughly 53 percent of those surveyed felt the president to be a competent and able leader; in January, 60% of Americans felt as confident in their president.

The survey was conducted by CNN just prior to Obama’s address to the nation regarding the BP disaster.  According to CNN, the poll “”offers evidence that the public’s view of Obama’s leadership is following the same pattern that George W. Bush experienced after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast in 2005.” At the time of hurricane Katrina, the percentage of those who were confident in Bush’s leadership dropped from 62 to 52 percent.

Taking a look at the negative end of the recent poll, 58% of those polled said that they were either “not very confident” or “not at all confident” that the Obama administration had what it takes to prevent another disaster like the BP spill.  Furthermore, 68% said they doubted that the Gulf of Mexico could ever be restored to its state prior to the spill.
