Palin-Endorsed Handel Leads Georgia Primary

Posted on 21. Jul, 2010 by in Politics

Karen Handel, backed by former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, won the most votes in Georgia’s Republican Primary on Tuesday, although she fell short of the 50 percent needed to side step a runoff next month.

The former Georgia Secretary of State led with 34 percent of the vote as 70 percent of precincts reported. This is a rather significant turn considering Handel was trailing prior to the endorsement of Sarah Palin on July 12.

On August 10, Handel will meet Nathan Deal in the runoff, who was running in second with 23.1 percent of the votes. The winner of the runoff will face former Democratic Governor Roy Barnes in the election to succeed Republican incumbent Sonny Perdue in November.

“The Palin endorsement really helped Handel,” stated Charles Bullock from the University of Georgia. “Handel’s success will make Palin’s endorsement even more desirable for candidates in other states.”

Palin was Republican Senator John McCain’s running mate in 2008 and many experts believe she is in a good position to run for president in 2012. She has been very active on the political stage, speaking on behalf of many Republicans, and specifically those she has dubbed “mama grizzlies” – a term she uses to describe strong political women.
