U.S Takes Arizona Immigration Law to Court

Posted on 22. Jul, 2010 by in Politics

President Barrack Obama’s administration will go to court on Thursday to determine if Arizona’s new immigration law does or does not challenge the federal authority for immigration enforcement and policies.

The Republican state had recently passed a very strict immigration law to prevent the continual flow of illegal immigrants (specifically Mexican) and to cut down on drug trafficking. This has led them to their conflict with the federal government, who on Thursday will challenge their authority in front of District Judge Susan Bolton. The new law is set to take place on August 29.

The Justice Department filed the case, claiming that the new Arizona law may violate the U.S Constitution and undermine U.S foreign policy.

“A ruling in either direction will probably be a very strong signal about how this judge views the validity of the Arizona law and the strength of the administration’s arguments,” said Carissa Hessick, an associate law professor at Arizona State University. At stake is “whether the administration has the full authority over immigration policy and immigration enforcement. It’s potentially a very big day.”

Immigration is a very important issue, specifically since it is an election year, and immigration as it pertains to the 11 million illegal workers – mostly low paying jobs – will take center stage.
