White House dodges questions about “9/11 mosque”

Although ordinarily the White House is quite vocal regarding controversies such as this one, namely the building of a mosque near the September 11th attack site in New York, in this case they have elected to keep their noses out of it. “This is rightly a matter for New York City and the local community to decide,” said Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.
In the past, however, President Obama has made his position on Islam in America very clear. “Islam, as we know, is part of America,” he said last September, and in a speech from last January he said: “We know that the vast majority of Muslims reject al Qaeda.” So, although the President has not commented on the current “9/11 victory mosque” scandal, we could assume that President Obama would condemn the ignorance of equating Islam with terrorism, and support the building of a facility that was originally intended to bring the West and Islam closer together.
Perhaps as someone who is concerned with voters, he does not want to offend the angry mob which simply doesn’t understand that here is a difference between religious extremism and Islam, but perhaps as a human being the President might also want to how show how insane and unreasonable the conservative public’s reaction to this has been.
