Live US Open Coverage: Maria Sharapova Eliminated

Posted on 07. Sep, 2010 by in Sports

In what was certainly a surprising Monday at the US Open, Maria Sharapova faced elimination.

Nine double faults and 36 unforced errors would eventually lead to her defeat.  Number one Caroline Wozniacki proved too difficult a challenge for Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova stated that Wozniacki got to every ball and hammered it back, making it extremely difficult to keep up with the pace.

Caroline Wozniacki was the runner-up in the 2009 event.  Many believe that she is fully capable of taking the crown at the 2010 US Open.  It was the first time in three meetings that Caroline Wozniacki defeated Maria Sharapova.

For the US Open Day 9 schedule, look to see the only two Americans remaining, Sam Querrey and Venus Williams, in action.  Also on the card is Rafael Nadal. Nadal is one of six Spaniards remaining in the tournament.  Kim Clijsters will also be looking to continue her success in the event.
