Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of a controlled substance in an Alabama state court on Tuesday, according to reports.
Russell was arrested at his home in Mobile as part of an undercover drugs investigation, an investigation that lasted for over two months. The 24 year old former LSU star was accused of possessing codeine syrup, of which he did not have a prescription. A preliminary hearing will be held on August 11.
“He’s upbeat. He’s looking forward to his day in court and getting this behind him,” stated Russell’s attorney, Donald Briskman.
“We fully expect he will be exonerated from these charges. That’s exactly how I feel. I’ve had an opportunity within the last week to get some additional information which bolsters my feeling that he’s ultimately going to be acquitted.”
“Be mindful of the fact that there were nearly a dozen people at the house when the sheriff conducted the investigation and raid,” said Briskman to WALA-TV in Mobile.
Russell was released by the Raiders in May following three rather disappointing seasons where he made $36.4 million in the final year alone. He is still owed $3 Million from the NFL franchise.
