Shahar Peer loses to Venus Williams

Tennis-celebrity Venus Williams beat Israel’s Shahar Peer 7-6 6-3, making it to the quarter finals of the U.S. Open. Williams, who has already won the event twice before, had many chances to break during the first set, but ended up converting only 2 out of 10 chances for break-point, as the set went into a tiebreak. Williams, however, managed to largely dominate the second set for the win.
Shahar Peer, born in Jerusalem in 1987, is arguably one of the best professional tennis players ever to come out of Israel; she achieved a world ranking of no. 14 in 2010, which is the highest rank ever reached by an Israeli. Despite her success, however, Peer has never been able to win a set against Venus Williams; even though Williams seemed to be off her game during her match with Peer, the only question to those watching seemed to be whether Williams would win by a little, or by a lot.
Venus Williams, born in 1980 in California, is currently ranked no. 4 in the world in singles and no. 1 in doubles. In the past, Williams has also been ranked no. 1 in singles on three separate occasions, the first time being in 2002. Williams also holds a total of 21 Grand Slam titles.
