Google’s Q-n-A Page Blocked in China

Posted on 03. Aug, 2010 by in Technology

Google’s Chinese language question and answer page has been blocked in China on Tuesday, further highlighting the Communist state’s control and fear of the internet.

The Chinese government has long fought to protect its people from harmful information that is shared every day on the internet. The nation uses what is commonly referred to as “The Great Firewall of China” in order to block information coming from overseas.

Search engines are meant to self-censor and block any potentially harmful information from leaking into China. Google’s page (www.google.com.hk/wenda) provides users with a forum to ask questions of any description; however, many of the subjects are very sensitive and may prove detrimental.

Many of the more recent questions have been about the June 4, 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, which is a topic that has been banned from public discussion in China.

One questioner asked when China would have its next Tiananmen uprising, with answers including “soon; the Communist Party will collapse”.

A Google spokewoman has denied any technical problems with the site: “If you are noticing there is a blockage you would need to ask the government as it would be an issue at their end,” she said.
