Bullfighting Outlawed in Catalonia

Posted on 28. Jul, 2010 by in World

The Spanish independence-seeking region of Catalonia has banned the popular sport of bullfighting, in what defenders of the sport see as their tradition being taken away.

Opponents of bullfighting have long criticized the sport as being barbaric; however, there are some who believe by banning the popular sport is an attempt to assert Catalan identity.

Lawmakers passed the ban in Catalonia’s regional assembly, amongst many emotional speeches. In an attempt to ban the sport that started over a year and a half ago, the decision has received international exposure.

During the assembly vote in Barcelona, the regional capital, there were further calls for increased anonymity within the Catalonian region, and some were even calling for total sovereignty.

Earlier this month, the northern region of Spain was the site of many protests and rallies regarding Catalonian outrage over the Spanish court’s decision to give greater self-rule to the region, yet did not grant outright independence.

Those in favour of the ban on bullfighting refuse to believe it is an attempt to give more independence to the Catalonian region, but instead was an act to end the practise of barbaric torturing of animals.
