Since entering into direct talks again on Thursday, the Israelis and Palestinians have agreed to work together to develop a framework agreement. The U.S. Middle-East envoy, George Mitchell, has said that framework would touch on all of the major issues between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and that the two sides have agreed to hold a meeting on September 14th and 15th.
“The purpose of a framework agreement will be to establish the fundamental compromises necessary to enable them to flesh out and complete a comprehensive treaty that will end the conflict and establish a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” Mitchell said.
During the meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, which also included Hilary Clinton and a chief negotiator for each of the leaders, Netanyahu and Abbas talked for 2 hours together privately, and George Mitchell said that the relationship between the two seemed quite pleasant: “I felt it was a very positive and constructive mood, both in terms of the nature of the interaction and in terms of the nature of the conversation that occurred.”
Mitchell declined to detail exactly what major issues would be on the table during the next round of talks.
