Israel won’t allow UN to question Israelis

Israel has agreed to the U.N.’s request to investigate the raid on the Gaza-bound aid flotilla. “There was no choice but to agree to the international community’s demands, first and foremost those of the US and the UN,” according to one official source. It was also said that Israel did not want to agree to the U.N.’s request, and that they simply had no choice in the matter: “Though Israel didn’t want another inquiry, there was no choice.”
However, Israel says that it will not allow the U.N. to question any Israeli civilians, soldiers, or officers. At the very most, it was said, the U.N. committee might be allowed to interrogate state leaders, but otherwise it would have to rely on documents for its investigation.
Political Scientist Yossi Shain from Tel Aviv University says that this is the right move to make for Israel to fulfill its commitments to the international community: “Israel wants to reduce tension and prevent additional flotillas, as well as express international cooperation, and this is the right way to do that…The mistakes were clear. The Eiland report highlighted them, and now we need to correct the damage on another plane – the damage is worse on the international front.”
