No Direct Talks Set Between Palestinians and Israel

Posted on 28. Jul, 2010 by in World

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas feels that the indirect talks between his people and Israel have not been successful enough to warrant face-to-face talks, according to a Palestinian official on Wednesday.

“Abbas will tell them that, until this moment, there is nothing to convince us to go to direct talks,” the official stated. “There is nothing new.”

Amongst pressure from the US, Abbas stated that he wants the indirect talks to have more substantial effects, specifically as they pertain to the security of the borders of the Palestinian state that he hopes to create on land that has been occupied by Israel since 1967.

Abbas will speak briefly with the Arab League regarding the progression of the indirect talks led by the US which began in May. Abbas reportedly refused the potential for direct talks with Israeli officials on July 17 at the behest of the US.

“We will tell the Arabs that the Americans brought nothing with them. We will most likely continue the remaining two months (of indirect talks) and see what happens,” said another Palestinian official.
