UK’s concern over Israel-Lebanon border conflict, Gaza

Posted on 04. Aug, 2010 by in World

The government of the UK said that they were “very concerned” about rockets being fired at Israel from Gaza and also condemned both Israel and Lebanon for their parts in the recent border dispute.  “We are very concerned by the recent rocket fire on towns in southern Israel, continuing violence in Gaza and today’s violence on the Israeli-Lebanon border, all of which underline the importance, for the region as a whole, of all parties committing to a lasting peace,” said a spokesman.  “We condemn the violence today that led to deaths on both sides and call on Israel and Lebanon to act with restraint.”

The UK has also said that Israel and the Palestinian National Authority should resume direct talks. ” Against this backdrop a move to substantial talks by the Israelis and Palestinians is essential; we encourage both parties to engage on the core issues as quickly as possible, and refrain from action that damages the process, in particular acts of violence, settlement construction or other provocations.”

It is a pretty incredible thing for a country not directly involved in a conflict between others to simply say “We don’t like that”.  However it seems this kind of thing may have some success in cases where conflict-countries feel the need to heed to the international community’s interests.
