US threatens Wikileaks censorship

Posted on 03. Aug, 2010 by in World

The Afghan War Diary released by Wikileaks is still sparking anger and threats of censorship in US political circles.  “I would really like to see President Obama move to ask the government of Iceland to shut that Web site down,” said Liz Cheney.  “I’d like to see him move to shut it down ourselves if Iceland won’t do it.”  The Wikileaks server is located in Sweden, which makes this comment a little baffling.

The former chief speechwriter for George W. Bush wrote an article for the Washington post where he says: “Assange is a non-U.S. person operating outside the territory of the United States. This means the government has a wide range of options for dealing with him. It can employ not only law enforcement, but also intelligence and military assets, to bring Assange to justice and put his criminal syndicate out of business.”  You would think from his tone that simply being a “non-U.S. person” (how eloquent!) is a crime in itself.

Though tagging Wikileaks as a “criminal syndicate” is a little hard to swallow, it is being reported (by typically right-wing papers) that their leaked information has already resulted in the deaths of certain Afghan informants.  Julian Assange, the site’s founder, has said there is no evidence that any individuals have been harmed because of the leaked documents.
