Western Forces Agree to Hand Over Afghanistan Control

Posted on 21. Jul, 2010 by in World

On Tuesday, an international conference agreed with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai’s plan to hand over military control to Afghani security forces to safeguard the nation within four years, according to official reports.

Although militants fired rockets at Kabul’s international airport, which forced United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to another air base, the capital was in lockdown during the talks and the city itself was untouched during the conference. The streets were nearly deserted except for the military vehicles of the U.N, while helicopters filled the sky.

President Karzai told U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of his confidence in his nation’s security forces: “I remain determined that our Afghan national security forces will be responsible for all military and law enforcement operations throughout our country by 2014.”

Currently only one-third of the $13 Billion in annual international aid is going directly to the Afghan government, but conference participants stated that they intend to increase that number to at least half of the annual international aid. In response, Karzai promised to increase security and to address the corruption issues plaguing his government which will include each government official declaring their full assets.

Karzai suggested the hand over last November when he officially took power.
